Thanks, glad you see it the way I do. Solondz is in his early 50s now, and while filmmaking is often a young person's game, as you state, plenty of talented filmmakers have kept making great stuff into their 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. The problem isn't so much Solondz's age, but that he seems to have run out of things to say. I thought "Palindromes" was a great flick, probably even his best, but even in that he returned to many similar themes that he'd explored previously, while adding in some new ones. With "Life During Wartime," he just doesn't seem to have anything new to add to these characters --- you get the sense that this story's already been told and that this isn't so much a sequel, or even an alternate take on them, but just an epilogue. He could have tacked a "ten years later ---" scene at the end of "Happiness" that would have done in five minutes what this flick struggles to fill 100-some minutes with.

I think you a right about this film.
I have seen all of Todd Solondz films and this was a half ass attempt at somthing new.
When I got a load of the opening shot I knew we were in for some recycled shit.
Why would you ever open two movies with the same shot, he really phoned this one in.
I stopped caring about these characters after 'HAPPENESS" was over.
He still has the style but this film lacked substance, it was dry, even down to the set design.
Film making is a young man's game and I hope this guy is not stuck over the hill, because he at one point kicked so much ass.
